The practical decisions that make the difference between an impressive installation and a room people love using.
01 / How much space does a home arcade need?
There is no universal minimum. Measure the equipment, occupied player areas, seating, service access and a continuous circulation route. Test the layout at full scale and confirm local requirements. A compact, well-used arrangement can be better than a larger room filled beyond its comfortable capacity. Start with the layout guide.
02 / Can an arcade share a living room?
Yes. Limit the equipment to what you use, coordinate its finishes with the house and protect the room’s everyday seating and circulation. Give sound, glare and storage the same attention you would in a dedicated room. A cabinet should add a new activity without displacing everything the room already does.
03 / Should I choose an original cabinet or a new build?
Choose an original for the specific historical experience and a new build for a tailored configuration. Compare condition, maintenance, controls, delivery and software rights separately. Neither age nor a premium finish guarantees comfortable play. Ask to test the games and controls that matter to you before committing.
04 / Do I need a CRT for retro games?
No. A suitable modern display and compatible signal conversion can be practical. CRTs offer a different historical experience but require planning for weight, heat and specialist maintenance. Internal CRT work can expose dangerous stored voltages and should be left to qualified technicians. Read the retro installation guide before choosing the display.
05 / Will acoustic panels stop sound reaching bedrooms?
Not necessarily. Absorption reduces reverberation inside a room; isolation addresses sound transmission through the building. Sensitive adjoining rooms may require an acoustician. Doors, structural connections, ventilation paths and low-frequency vibration all need consideration. Start by listening in adjoining spaces during realistic use.
06 / Can every classic game use the same controls?
No. Joystick arrangements, trackballs, spinners, steering controls and button layouts serve different games. Start with a shortlist of favourites and specify controls accordingly. Trying to accommodate everything on one panel can compromise the games you play most. A full-size mock-up helps reveal reach and elbow-space problems.
07 / Does owning a console make game downloads lawful?
Not automatically. Copyright, copying exceptions and licences depend on the title and jurisdiction. Use authorised sources and obtain advice when rights are unclear. An emulator’s availability does not grant permission to download or distribute copyrighted games.
08 / When should an electrician join the project?
Before fixing the equipment and joinery plan. A qualified electrician should assess the supply, equipment loads, isolation and any proposed fixed wiring. Early input helps avoid inaccessible sockets and alterations after the finishes are complete. Do not infer electrical safety from a room diagram or a product’s appearance.
09 / Does the contact tool send my room details?
No. It creates plain text in your browser. You can copy it or save a text file. Sending an email is a separate action that you choose. The tool does not submit your outline or store it in local storage. See Your data, clearly for the distinction between local drafting and contacting us.
