Choose a purpose, not a catalogue
Write down the games your household actually returns to. A short list is more useful than a promise of thousands of titles. Pac-Man asks something different of a joystick than Street Fighter II, while Centipede depends on a trackball. A crowded panel that tries to accommodate every control can make the most frequently played games less comfortable. Decide which experiences deserve dedicated hardware and which can remain on a separate console.
Then describe the cabinet’s domestic role. A restored upright can become a focal point; a restrained new build might read more like joinery. A cocktail cabinet invites people to sit opposite one another, but its glass top and control positions change the furniture plan. A wall-mounted format saves some floor depth without eliminating the space occupied by players. Judge every format with bodies in front of it, not just against an empty wall.
Mock up the human interface
Ask the maker for a full-size control-panel drawing before approving fabrication. Better still, build a simple cardboard or scrap-board mock-up. Put two people beside one another and test elbow space, wrist position and the reach to start buttons. A panel that looks balanced in elevation may force players into awkward positions. Include the shortest regular player and anyone who expects to play while seated.
Control choice should follow game behaviour. Four-way and eight-way joystick arrangements are not interchangeable in feel, and switching mechanisms vary. Sanwa and Seimitsu are established component makers, but their names alone do not specify a suitable configuration. Ask for exact component references, mounting details and replacement availability. A removable panel, labelled connectors and sensible cable slack make routine maintenance less intimidating and help a future technician understand the build without dismantling the entire room.
Make accessibility part of the first conversation. Consider knee clearance, reach, operating force and whether an alternative controller can connect without tools. There is no single cabinet height that fits every household. A physical trial is more useful than treating an internet measurement as a universal ergonomic rule.
Specify the image honestly
A display is not just a diagonal measurement. Screen orientation, native aspect ratio, viewing angle and processing delay all affect the experience. Many classic arcade games were designed for a 4:3 display, sometimes rotated vertically. Stretching that image across a widescreen panel changes its proportions. Ask the builder to demonstrate your actual games with the intended scaling and visible borders before choosing the cabinet opening.
A cathode-ray tube can be appealing for historically sensitive restoration, but it adds weight, heat and specialist maintenance. Dangerous voltages can remain inside a CRT assembly even after it has been unplugged. Do not treat internal CRT work as a casual homeowner task. A modern flat panel is usually simpler to integrate, although its electronics and image processing still deserve testing. Position the screen to minimise reflections from windows and ceiling fittings rather than relying on maximum brightness.
Sound should be equally deliberate. Small speakers mounted into a resonant wooden enclosure can create an unexpectedly boomy result. Request an accessible volume control, sensible isolation and a demonstration at an ordinary evening listening level. The target is clear game feedback, not a room that must compete with itself.
Commission the complete object
Furniture-quality work includes the parts you rarely see. Specify edge durability, cleanable surfaces, ventilation openings, secure access panels and how the cabinet will be moved. Veneer, laminate and painted finishes age differently around hand contact. Bring samples into the room and examine them in daylight and under the proposed evening lighting. A luxurious finish is one that can tolerate being used.
Ask for external dimensions, packed dimensions, weight and the route required for delivery. Check door openings, stairs, turning points and floor capacity with appropriate professionals where necessary. Leave access to power isolation and servicing; a perfectly fitted recess can become an expensive trap. Have a qualified electrician assess the supply and any new fixed wiring. Ventilation must remain effective after the cabinet is placed against its intended backdrop.
Finally, put the agreement in writing: component schedule, drawings, finish samples, game licensing responsibilities, delivery method, acceptance tests and aftercare. MAME is an emulation project, not a blanket licence to distribute copyrighted games. Confirm lawful software sources separately from the cabinet purchase. Before sign-off, test a cold start, both players, every control, sound adjustment and shutdown. Character comes from thoughtful decisions repeated consistently, not from adding one more illuminated button.
